Brilliant and incisive. Such a fundamental and simple point still nuanced by divine depth—one so often ignored by all failing to see the moral and divine guidance behind the muhajideen in Gaza and the resistance axis broadly. Contrary to the neutered and rote colonized Islam of our era—you rooted this much needed analysis in the key Quranic verses governing this armed struggle (as well all as others from the battle of Badr to Karbala to today). The Hasbara myths of October 7 about rape/beheaded babies/ovens etc—which no right minded Muslim ever believed knowing Hamas would stay true to the islamic tenants of armed resistance and hostages of war (and all other imperial colonial myths from the 1940s to now) are so easily shattered into pieces by your work and the words of the mujahideen , revealed to be the opaque and naive “analysis” from even “leftist” western reporters analysts who continue to condemn October 7—even the “pro-Palestine” Muslim Mamandi

Thank you. Jazakum Allah khayiran katheeran. Deeply humbled and honored by your comment & labor in engagement. All thanks be to Allah, our honorable mujahideen, ancestors, resilient peoples, prisoners and their families who I’m merely a student of. Elhamdolilallah

No thank you! Subscribing to all of your content including paid subscription pieces is more than worth it, and much better than getting access to over jargonized and cloistered analysis from a PhD program which would inevitable result in Zionist led doxxing and personal information being sent to the feds…working my way through Islam and Anarchism now.

Your work never betrays the obligations everyone of us in the ummah have to combat tyranny and oppression, mash’Allah, truly!

As a "reader" with limited immediately available resources may I ask the author for the source and origin for the use of the word "box thorn"? So just to be clear, are you proposing a theocracy here? I won't say you aren't within your rights to, I can certainly see how you come to these sorts of conclusions, but by that same token, can't you see how, to put it lightly, many people would have entirely reasonable objections to the idea of a theocratic society? I mean, you've seen what Wahhabism has done, and can surely understand the dangers of religious extremism.

I do not push this point with contempt in my heart, nor disrespect, but yes, as someone who isn't Muslim, a lot of this kind of rhetoric just... unnerves me- I see echoes of what creates suicide bombers in it. On the other hand, I do see the general wisdom in what you're actually *saying*, from a material point of view, and therefore want to engage in good faith.

Salam alikum

It doesn’t seem you’ve engaged my scholarship or work thoroughly. The mujahideen in Gaza represent what I refer to as an Islam of the Below premised on the Quran of the Oppressed. They war for an anti-statist Ummah (not a theocracy) and a world of the Below where all worlds fit, as in not exclusively for Muslims but rather for all believers anchored in spiritual ethical-political social justice commitments. Please continue reading the substack communiques or my book “Islam and anarchism” (https://www.plutobooks.com/product/islam-and-anarchism/).

To compare the the Islam of the mujahideen in Gaza to Wahabbism is deeply misguided.

I see- so your intent is essentially a kind of liberation theology, then! I can respect that, actually- I just personally, even as someone who's semi-religious, do not necessarily jibe with the implied antagonism to secularism. You are a very interesting writer, to be sure!

Dr. Mohamed Abdou مُحَمَّد's avatar

Secularism is a religious colonial Euro-American concept that masks its Christian ethos. As an abstract idea it only exists as a'ideal' phony feature of the modern state that within itself denies non-statist spiritual BIPOC forms of sovereignty and governance that aren't hierarchical and capitalist. The US isn't a 'secular' society. Manifest Destiny, Doctrines of Discovery, terra nullius, Protestant conceptualizations of property, and Victorian notions of gender and sexuality. Please see the communique "God Damn America"

I must agree to disagree with most everything in this comment- I mean, literally the biggest revolutionary socialist movement in the world was secular, besides the fact that, yes, the US is a Christian theocracy. I do very much agree on that.

Suggest An Yountae's article "The Coloniality of the Secular: Race, Religion, and Poetics of World-Making": https://philpapers.org/rec/ANTCOG

Or his book after the same title: https://www.dukeupress.edu/the-coloniality-of-the-secular

As an interdisciplinary scholar of religious and BIPOC studies, I can recommend tons of other readings or you can draw on the hundreds of citations in my own book.

I'll certainly take a look at them, nice to learn other views.
